Biography

Damien Tomkins

Damien is currently pursuing his M.A. in International Affairs with an Asian focus at the School of International Service, American University.  His research interests revolve around the People’s Republic of China and the growing influence that China is currently having within Asia and beyond.  These include, but are not limited to, the development of Chinese civil society, Chinese trade and raw commodity acquisition, and China’s use of soft power.  Currently Damien is working on a research paper regarding the China-Pakistan bilateral relationship.  Damien is also in editorial staff member of the Journal of International Service, a graduate student publication of the School of International Service.

Prior to joining the Atlantic Council as an intern, Damien worked at American University for four years.  From 2002 – 2004 he taught pedagogy and English at Bijie Teachers’ College, Guizhou Province, as part of Voluntary Services Overseas development work in China.  Damien also travelled for two years overland and by sea from Cape Town to Cairo.  He received a joint First Class Honours BA from the University of Wales, Lampeter in Anthropology and Religious Studies.  He has a working knowledge of Mandarin Chinese and a basic understanding of French.

The Future of Afghanistan: A Conversation with Ashraf Ghani

On April 22, the South Asia Center of the Atlantic Council hosted former Afghan Minister of Finance Dr. Ashraf Ghani for a conversation on the future of Afghanistan.  The Atlantic Council also unveiled its Afghanistan Report by Dr. Ghani, A Ten-Year Framework for Afghanistan: Executing the Obama Plan and Beyond.
